Short North Residents Encouraged to Attend Streetcar Neighborhood Forum

May 15th Meeting to Explore Streetcar Costs and Benefits for Area Residents

Residents of the Short North area neighborhoods are encouraged to attend a forum on May 15 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Goodale Park Shelter House to learn about the City of Columbus’ plan to build streetcars along High Street.

The forum will feature presentations by Michael Reese, Mayor Coleman’s chief of staff; John Rosenberger, former head of the Capitol South Urban Redevelopment Corp; and Mike Brown, Mayor Coleman’s public relations director. City council member Mary Ellen O’Shaugnessey and a representative from COTA are also expected to attend.

Those who attend the forum will learn detailed information about the City’s streetcar plan, which proposes a system that would run from the Franklin County Courthouse to The Ohio State University. They’ll also be able to ask pointed questions to clarify the impact streetcars would have on the Short North area and its surrounding neighborhoods.

“Building a streetcar system in our neighborhood would be a huge undertaking,” said Jeff Smith, president of the Victorian Village Society. “It’s imperative for our residents to come together, learn about the plan, and ask questions.”

The forum is sponsored by the Victorian Village Society, the Italian Village Society, the Short North Foundation, Friends of Goodale Park, the Circles Association, and the Harrison West Society.

FRIENDS OF GOODALE PARK AWARDED GRANT
FROM THE SCOTTS MIRACLE-GRO COMPANY

Mark your calendars, don’t miss the Award Ceremony and the “Annual Planting of the Annuals” in Goodale Park  –  Saturday, May 10!

Goodale Park has been awarded a $12,000 grant by The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company in cooperation with Keep Columbus Beautiful.  One of only five grants awarded nationwide -- our grant will be used for plants and product to create beautiful new landscaping around the lake, extend water lines to nearby planting areas, and re-establish turf in the "dog area".

The Awards Ceremony is at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 10 near the gazebo.  Representatives of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, Keep Columbus Beautiful, Columbus City Council, and Mayor Coleman will be in attendance.  We will have annuals at all the beds so bring your trowel and put a few plants in the ground while you're here - an instant burst of color!   This will be a great event with fresh air, exercise, food, music, and visiting dignitaries - all while making your neighborhood park even more beautiful!

Park Street Patio Promises Quieter Summer

UPDATE:  Sound testing for the new system will take place on Thursday May 22nd

Representatives of the Park Street Patio Grill Kitchen said the entertainment spot just south of Victorian Village is redoing its outdoor sound system and will comply with noise levels dictated by the city code.  Many area residents complained of high noise levels during Park Street's inaugural season last summer and fall.

Mary Beth Porter and Randy Haffey emphasized at the regular Victorian Village meeting  that owner Chris Corso, himself a Victorian Village resident, will "spend and do what it takes" to prevent the sounds of the bands from disturbing our residential neighborhood.  Park Street plans sound tests in May a month before its outdoor season begins in June. Porter and Haffey said they will respond to questions and complaints at any time.

Joe Hoess, a member of the Victorian Village Society, has been coordinating discussions with Park Street and the City of Columbus over the issue of noise from area entertainment spots and will be the main contact person for any issue regarding noise in our neighborhood.  Please contact Joe at: noise@victorianvillage.org.

Be a part of Victorian Village's biggest event -
The 34th Annual Tour of Homes and Gardens!

The Tour and Preview Events are set for the weekend of September 20th and 21st, but the planning is already underway, and we need your help.

Consider putting your house or residence on the Tour and showcase what you have done to preserve and improve one of Columbus' most historic and beautiful neighborhoods.

You can also volunteer for a variety of jobs such as Tour Guides, House Captains, Ticket Sellers, Party Planners, and much more.

Being part of the Tour, in any capacity, is a great experience and helps raise funds for the Victorian Village Society, the neighborhood memberhsip organization.  The Society's primary challenge is to promote the restoration, preservation and maintenance of the historical district.

Your help in shaping this year's Tour is a great investment in your neighborhood and its future.
